24 Port Gigabit Switches

Twenty-four seems to be a magic number when it comes to gigabit network switches as though there are switches with more ports available, such as the 48 port devices, most searches will yield maybe half the results and prices of at least twice as much. 24 port gigabit switches are often inexpensive enough they are worth installing in the place of a switch that would offer just enough ports for current needs, especially if expansion of the network is at all imminent. Sometimes it is worth spending a bit more if it means you will not have to swap the switch in a few months, especially when paying labor costs to have the switch installed.

Various manufacturers produce 24 port gigabit switches, including Cisco, Belkin, HP, D-Link , Netgear, and Dell, among other, lesser known names. Although Cisco is generally considered the premiere in networking equipment, other brands may offer features that will be useful in some situations. Linksys and Cisco are the same company, and their names are sometimes used together or interchangeably on packaging, though Linksys is generally the less expensive and less feature rich of the two. Cisco seems to be shifting more toward the Linksys name being associated with smaller capacity devices, though, as opposed to ones with less features.

The Linksys SR2024C Gigabit Switch is a great example of a switch that some may pay more for due to a feature. The Linksys SR2024C is almost identical to the SR2024 except in size. Measuring much less than its larger brother, about as small as it can get and still fit 24 places to plug in an Ethernet cable, the Linksys SR2024C is perfect for squeezing in to places that nothing else will fit. Considering network equipment is often installed in closets and attics, small is good.

Another player in the 24 port game is the Netgear GS724T 24-port Gigabit Smart Switch. Not only does this switch offer many of the same features as the Linksys, such as 2000Mbps throughput, but it also has two optional fiber ports for even greater distance than the typical Ethernet cable can provide. Netgear also boasts simple switch management for the price of an unmanaged switch.
