Twenty-four seems to be a magic number when it comes to gigabit network switches as though there are switches with more ports available, such as the 48 port devices, most searches will yield maybe half the results and prices of at least twice as much. 24 port gigabit switches are often inexpensive enough they are worth installing in the place of a switch that would offer just enough ports for current needs, especially if expansion of the network is at all imminent. Sometimes it is worth spending a bit more if it means you will not have to swap the switch in a few months, especially when paying labor costs to have the switch installed.

Various manufacturers produce 24 port gigabit switches, including Cisco, Belkin, HP, D-Link , Netgear, and Dell, among other, lesser known names. Although Cisco is generally considered the premiere in networking equipment, other brands may offer features that will be useful in some situations.
